Mount Eden and One Tree Hill, both extinct volcanic craters within the city, offer free climbs to panoramic views over the entire Auckland isthmus, from the Waitemata to the Manukau harbours.
A short ferry ride to Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf, delivers vineyards, olive groves, and beaches within 40 minutes of downtown, one of the best half-day or full-day trips available directly from the city.
Maori Culture
The Auckland War Memorial Museum holds an outstanding Maori and Pacific collection, including a full wharenui (meeting house) and a daily cultural performance, a strong introduction before travelling further into New Zealand.
Rotorua, a few hours south, is the more immersive destination for Maori cultural experiences and geothermal activity, and pairs well with Auckland as the start or end of a longer North Island itinerary.
