North of Varna, Bulgaria's Black Sea coast turns into a run of large, tree-backed resort towns built for a slower, more family-oriented holiday than the south: Golden Sands, Albena, and the smaller Kranevo, all within a short drive of Varna's old town and airport.
Golden Sands: Family-Friendly Resort Beaches
Golden Sands takes its name from the fine, pale sand along its four-kilometre beach, backed by a strip of pine forest that keeps the resort noticeably cooler and greener than Sunny Beach further south. The town is dense with mid-size and large hotels, most all-inclusive, and the beach itself is wide enough that it rarely feels as packed as the coast's bigger southern resorts even in August. It's a short local bus or taxi ride into Varna proper for anyone who wants a change of scene.
Albena: Gardens, Spas & Wide Sands
A little further north, Albena is a single, centrally planned resort built around wide gardens, a network of cycle paths, and one of the broadest beaches on the coast. It has a reputation as Bulgaria's most polished resort town, with a noticeably higher concentration of spa hotels and a calmer, more manicured feel than Golden Sands. The Baltata Nature Reserve, a rare longose (flooded) forest, sits at the resort's southern edge and is an easy walk or cycle from most hotels.
Varna: The Sea Capital
Bulgaria's third-largest city and self-styled "sea capital" sits between the two resort clusters, with a walkable old town, a Roman bath complex, and an archaeological museum holding the oldest worked gold found anywhere in the world, predating both Egypt and Mesopotamia. The seafront Sea Garden park runs for several kilometres along the bay and is where most of the city's evening life happens in summer.
