Old San Juan's colourful colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and the imposing Castillo San Felipe del Morro fortress, guarding the harbour since the 16th century, make it one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial cities in the Caribbean.
El Morro's grassy esplanade, facing the Atlantic, is a popular spot for kite-flying and picnics against the fortress walls, particularly in the late afternoon when the light turns golden over the ocean.
Bioluminescent Bays and El Yunque
Puerto Rico holds several of the world's most consistently bioluminescent bays, where microorganisms in the water glow blue when disturbed, Mosquito Bay on Vieques island is generally considered the brightest, best experienced on a moonless night by kayak.
El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system, offers waterfall hikes and a canopy walk through lush jungle just over an hour from San Juan, with El Yunque peak offering views across the island on clear days.
