Victoria Falls (known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders") sends a curtain of spray visible from kilometres away as the Zambezi River drops over 100 metres into a narrow gorge. It straddles the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and each side offers a genuinely different experience.
Zambia or Zimbabwe
The Zimbabwean side (Victoria Falls town) has the more extensive network of viewpoints and generally the better overall view of the main falls, especially during high water season from roughly March to May.
The Zambian side (Livingstone) has fewer viewpoints but access to Devil's Pool, a natural rock pool right at the edge of the falls where, during low water months (roughly August to January), visitors can swim to the very lip of the drop.
Adventure Activities
The Victoria Falls Bridge, connecting both countries, hosts one of the highest bungee jumps in the world (111 metres) directly over the Zambezi gorge, along with a bridge swing and zipline for those who want the view without the free fall.
White-water rafting on the Zambezi below the falls is considered some of the most exciting commercially-run rafting in the world, with grade 5 rapids through a dramatic basalt gorge, best done during lower water months when rapids are more pronounced.
