Athens carries 2,500 years of history within walking distance of its centre, and in the last decade has added a genuinely excellent food and bar scene to that historical weight, a city that rewards both the museum-goer and the person who just wants a good dinner with a view.
The Acropolis and Ancient Athens
Visit the Acropolis at opening time, 8am, both to beat the heat and the crowds, the marble underfoot gets slippery and the site gets genuinely uncomfortable by midday in summer. The Acropolis Museum below, with its glass floor over active excavations, is the best modern counterpart to the ruins above.
The Ancient Agora and Roman Forum, less visited than the Acropolis itself, give a better sense of how Athenians actually lived, the marketplace, the philosophical schools, the everyday city beneath the monuments.
Modern Athens
Plaka, the old neighbourhood beneath the Acropolis, is touristy but genuinely charming, narrow lanes, neoclassical houses, and enough good tavernas that you can eat well without hunting hard. Psiri and Monastiraki, just north, have the better bar and nightlife scene.
Athens has an emerging rooftop bar culture built specifically around Acropolis views, book a table at somewhere like A for Athens or 360 Cocktail Bar for sunset, when the ancient site is lit gold against the darkening sky.
