Mykonos has a reputation as the Aegean's party island, and the beach clubs live up to that, but the island also has genuinely quiet corners, the old town's whitewashed lanes at dawn, remote northern beaches, and villages that see a fraction of the cruise-ship crowds.
Chora and the Windmills
Mykonos Town (Chora) is a labyrinth of whitewashed cube houses deliberately laid out to confuse pirates centuries ago, it still works on tourists today. Little Venice, where houses hang directly over the sea, is best seen at sunset with a drink from one of the waterfront bars.
The row of windmills above Little Venice is the island's signature image, visit at golden hour when the light catches the white stone and the crowds thin from their midday peak.
Beyond the Beach Clubs
Paradise and Super Paradise beaches deliver the loud, famous Mykonos experience, sunbeds, DJs, day-drinking. For the opposite, head to Agios Sostis or Fokos in the island's quieter north, both unpaved, unclubby, and often nearly empty even in August.
Ano Mera, the island's other town inland, has none of Chora's polish but a genuinely local feel, a working monastery, tavernas without English menus, and a good counterpoint to the coastal scene.
