Bilbao: The Museum That Rebuilt a City

Bilbao was a declining industrial port until Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum opened in 1997, a titanium-curved building so architecturally significant that it single-handedly turned around the city's fortunes and gave urban planners a term ('the Bilbao effect') for the idea that one great building can transform an entire city's trajectory.

The Guggenheim and Riverfront

The Guggenheim's titanium panels shift colour with the light and weather, and the building is as much a sculpture to walk around as a museum to enter, Jeff Koons's flower-covered Puppy sits permanently outside, and Louise Bourgeois's giant spider sculpture, Maman, guards another entrance.

The riverfront promenade connecting the Guggenheim to the old town has been entirely redeveloped, with a footbridge by Santiago Calatrava and public art scattered along its length, a pleasant, walkable transition between Bilbao's new architectural identity and its historic core.

The Old Town

Casco Viejo, the old town's seven original streets, retains the pintxos bar culture found across the Basque Country, order at the counter, keep track of toothpicks, and don't skip the Ribera Market, one of Europe's largest covered markets, for fresh Basque produce and seafood.

Mount Artxanda, reached by funicular from the city centre, gives a full overview of the transformation, old industrial Bilbao along the river, and the Guggenheim's titanium curves catching the light from above.
