Chefchaouen, tucked into the Rif Mountains, is painted almost entirely in shades of blue, walls, doors, stairways, and archways in a palette that shifts through indigo, sky blue, and turquoise depending on the light. The origin of the tradition is disputed: some attribute it to Jewish refugees who arrived in the 1930s believing blue represented the sky and heaven, others to more practical explanations involving mosquito repellent or simple tradition.
The Blue Medina
The medina's steep, narrow streets reward slow, aimless wandering more than any specific itinerary, every turn reveals a slightly different composition of blue walls, potted plants, and cats sunning themselves on stairways, a genuinely photogenic town in every direction.
Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the main square, is ringed by cafes and the red sandstone Kasbah, a rare architectural break from the blue that houses a small museum and gardens, climb its tower for a view over the blue rooftops.
The Rif Mountains
The Spanish Mosque, on a hillside just outside town, offers the best overview photograph of Chefchaouen's blue sprawl against the surrounding mountains, a twenty-minute uphill walk best timed for sunset, when the whole town glows.
The Rif Mountains surrounding the town offer hiking into Talassemtane National Park, including trails to natural swimming spots and cedar forests, a cooler, greener contrast to Morocco's more famous desert landscapes.
