Costa Rica holds roughly 5% of the world's biodiversity in a country smaller than West Virginia, a fact visitors quickly understand on even a short guided walk, howler monkeys overhead, sloths in the canopy, and more bird and insect species than a lifetime could catalogue.
Cloud Forest and Volcanoes
Monteverde's cloud forest, reached via a scenic but rough mountain road, offers hanging bridges through the canopy and some of the best chances in the country to spot the resplendent quetzal, a bird considered sacred by the ancient Maya.
Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica's most active, anchors a national park with hiking trails through lava fields and access to natural hot springs heated by the same geothermal activity, a good combination of adventure and relaxation.
Choosing a Coast
The Pacific coast (Manuel Antonio, Nosara, Tamarindo) has more developed tourism infrastructure and better surf breaks, generally drier weather, and easier access from San José.
The Caribbean coast (Puerto Viejo, Cahuita) moves slower, has a distinct Afro-Caribbean cultural influence, and offers excellent, less crowded snorkelling and wildlife viewing, including nesting sea turtles in season.
