Geneva: Diplomacy on the Water

Geneva punches above its size, home to the UN's European headquarters, the Red Cross, and a disproportionate share of the world's diplomacy, all wrapped around a lake with a 140-metre fountain as its unofficial symbol. It's compact enough to see on foot and close enough to the French Alps for Mont Blanc to be visible from the shoreline on a clear day.

The Lake and Old Town

The Jet d'Eau, Geneva's famous fountain, is best seen from the Pont du Mont-Blanc at sunset, when the spray catches the light. The promenade along the lake's edge, past the English Garden's flower clock, is Geneva's most pleasant free activity, especially in the evening when the whole city seems to be out walking.

The old town, on a low hill above the lake, holds St. Pierre Cathedral and a warren of cobbled streets housing antique shops and small squares. Climb the cathedral's towers for a view across both the lake and the rooftops toward the French Alps.

Watches, Chocolate, and Day Trips

Geneva is a centre of the Swiss watch industry, and the Patek Philippe Museum is worth an hour even for the mildly curious, centuries of mechanical ingenuity in a single building. Pair it with a stop at one of the city's old chocolatiers, several of which have been in the same family for generations.

Chamonix, across the border in France, is under an hour away and gives direct access to Mont Blanc via the Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest cable car ascents in Europe, with views across the entire massif.

Practical tipAsk your hotel for a free Geneva Transport Card, given to all overnight guests, covering unlimited bus, tram, and train travel within the city for the length of your stay.
