Ibiza's reputation as Europe's clubbing capital is well earned but tells only half the story, the island's UNESCO-listed old town, Dalt Vila, is a walled Renaissance fortress town of genuine historic weight, and the quieter north holds coves and hippy markets that have almost nothing in common with the superclub scene further south.
Dalt Vila and the South
Dalt Vila, Ibiza Town's walled old quarter, climbs a hill in tiers of whitewashed buildings behind 16th-century fortifications built to defend against Ottoman raids, a genuinely impressive piece of Renaissance military architecture that most clubbing-focused visitors never see. Walk the full ramparts at sunset for views across the harbour and, on clear evenings, toward Formentera.
The superclubs (Pacha, Amnesia, Ushuaïa) cluster around Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio, running a summer season of resident DJs that draws the island's international clubbing crowd. Ticket prices are steep; door lists and guest lists matter more than almost anywhere else in Europe.
The Quiet North
The north of the island, around Sant Joan and Sant Miquel, is where Ibiza's earlier hippy identity survives, the Las Dalias market, running since the 1980s, sells crafts and clothing in a scene that predates the club culture by decades. Cala Xarraca and Cala Benirràs offer quiet coves without the beach-club density of the south.
Benirràs beach hosts a Sunday sunset drum circle that has run informally for decades, arrive by mid-afternoon for a spot on the sand, order a drink from the beach bar, and watch the ritual unfold as the sun drops behind the headland.
