The Kerala backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, and lakes running parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, and the standard way to experience them (an overnight houseboat cruise from Alleppey) is one of India's most distinctive and restorative travel experiences.
The Houseboat Experience
A kettuvallam (traditional rice barge, now converted to houseboats with bedrooms and a crew) drifts slowly through narrow canals lined with coconut palms and paddy fields, passing village life (laundry being washed, children swimming, small temples along the banks) at a pace that forces genuine relaxation.
Book a smaller, better-reviewed operator with a private cabin rather than the cheapest option, quality varies significantly, and a good crew will adjust the route to avoid the more congested main channels near Alleppey town.
Beyond the Backwaters
Munnar, a hill station a few hours from the backwaters, has terraced tea plantations rolling across the Western Ghats, a striking contrast to the flat backwater landscape and worth combining into a longer Kerala itinerary.
Fort Kochi, Kerala's most historic town, layers Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial architecture with Chinese fishing nets still in daily use along its waterfront, a good bookend stop before or after the backwaters.

Kumarakom Lake Resort
Traditional Kerala-style heritage villas set among lagoons on the edge of Vembanad Lake, a good base for a shorter backwater experience without committing to a full overnight houseboat.
