Ljubljana might be the calmest capital city in Europe, its historic centre is almost entirely car-free, the Ljubljanica River is lined with café terraces rather than traffic, and the whole city can be walked end to end in under an hour, leaving plenty of time for Lake Bled just up the road.
The Old Town and Ljubljana Castle
The Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge, the city's two signature crossings, anchor a riverside old town of pastel buildings and outdoor cafés, the dragons, the city's symbol since medieval times, appear on the bridge and throughout Ljubljana's crests and statues.
Ljubljana Castle, reached by funicular, sits on a hill above the old town with a viewing tower giving a full panorama over the terracotta rooftops to the surrounding hills, arrive at sunset for the best light.
Day Trip to Lake Bled
Lake Bled, less than an hour from Ljubljana by bus or train, has a church on a tiny island reachable only by traditional pletna boats, and a clifftop castle overlooking the whole scene, go early to photograph the lake before the wind picks up and disturbs its mirror surface.
Ring the church bell on the island for good luck, the local tradition, then climb to the castle for the postcard view back down over the lake and the church's red-roofed spire.
