The Maldives is essentially a scattering of coral atolls barely above sea level, and its entire tourism model is built around isolation, most resorts occupy a single private island, meaning your choice of atoll and resort matters more here than in almost any other destination.
Choosing an Atoll
North and South Malé Atolls, closest to the airport, are the most convenient (short speedboat transfers) and generally the most budget-friendly, though the coral in these more visited reefs is less pristine than further afield.
For the best diving and manta ray encounters, the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) or the more remote Addu Atoll require seaplane transfers but reward with noticeably better marine life density and quieter resorts.
Life on the Water
An overwater bungalow, with direct steps down into the lagoon, is worth the premium over a beach villa at least once, waking up over the water, watching reef fish from your own deck, is a genuinely singular experience.
Snorkelling straight off the house reef, without a boat, is often just as good as a dedicated excursion in the Maldives, ask your resort which house reef entry points have the best coral coverage before booking paid boat trips.
