Perth: One of the World's Most Isolated Cities

Perth is often cited as one of the most isolated major cities in the world, separated from Adelaide, the nearest comparably sized city, by over 2,000 kilometres of largely empty outback, an isolation that has shaped a genuinely relaxed, outdoors-oriented culture built around the Swan River, an exceptional run of ocean beaches, and the Margaret River wine region a few hours south.

Beaches and the River

Cottesloe Beach, Perth's most iconic stretch of sand, is known for its Indiana Cooke lifesaving pavilion and reliably excellent sunsets over the Indian Ocean, a genuine local institution rather than just a tourist stop, busy with Perth residents most summer evenings.

Kings Park, one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, sits on a hill above the Swan River offering panoramic views over the city skyline and river, a good introduction to Perth's layout and its relationship with the water.

Margaret River and Rottnest Island

Margaret River, roughly three hours south, has developed into one of Australia's most respected wine regions, alongside excellent surf breaks and cave systems, a worthwhile multi-day trip for anyone spending more than a few days in the Perth area.

Rottnest Island, a short ferry ride offshore, is home to the quokka, a small, famously photogenic marsupial that appears to smile for photos, alongside excellent snorkelling bays and a bike-friendly, largely car-free island layout.

Practical tipBook Rottnest Island ferry tickets and, if visiting in peak season, bike rentals in advance, the island's popularity, especially for quokka photos, means both can sell out on busy days.
