Rovaniemi sits directly on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, a fact the city has embraced fully by declaring itself Santa Claus's official hometown, complete with a year-round Christmas village. Beyond the theming, it's a genuine gateway to Arctic wilderness, reindeer, husky sledding, and some of the more reliable aurora borealis viewing in Europe during the dark winter months.

Santa Claus Village, built directly on the Arctic Circle line (marked with a painted stripe across the ground), lets visitors meet Santa year-round, cross the circle with a certificate to prove it, and mail postcards from the village's own post office, which receives letters addressed to Santa from children worldwide.
It's unabashedly touristy, but well done for what it is, and works equally well as a family activity or a slightly ironic stop for adults travelling through Lapland, the reindeer and husky enclosures next door are genuinely worthwhile regardless of how you feel about the Santa theming.
Aurora and Arctic Activities
The aurora borealis is visible from Rovaniemi on a good number of clear nights between late August and early April, with dedicated glass-igloo accommodations and aurora camps nearby offering better odds than the city centre due to less light pollution.
Husky and reindeer sledding tours run through the winter months across the surrounding taiga forest, a full-day tour combining both, with a stop at a Sami reindeer herder's camp, gives the fullest sense of Lapland's traditional way of life.
