Tallinn: Medieval Walls, Digital Nation

Tallinn's old town is one of the most complete medieval city centres left in Europe, intact walls, watchtowers, and a skyline of church spires that hasn't changed much in five hundred years. It sits oddly alongside Estonia's reputation as one of the most digitally advanced nations on earth, a contrast that gives the city its particular character.

The Walled Old Town

Toompea Hill, the upper old town, holds the pink Baroque Kadriorg-style Toompea Castle (now Estonia's parliament) and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with viewpoints over the lower town's red rooftops from platforms just off Kohtuotsa street. Go at opening time to get the classic photo without a crowd in it.

The lower town's Town Hall Square is the medieval commercial heart, ringed by merchant houses now converted to restaurants and shops, climb the Town Hall tower for a rooftop perspective, or simply wander the surrounding lanes where most of the wall's original 26 towers still stand.

Modern Tallinn

Telliskivi Creative City, a former industrial complex just outside the old town, has become Tallinn's hub for startups, galleries, and street food, a useful counterpoint to the medieval centre and a good gauge of the digital-first culture Estonia is known for internationally.

Kalamaja, the wooden-house neighbourhood next to Telliskivi, has some of the city's best coffee and a beach along the Baltic within walking distance, a quieter, more residential contrast to the tourist density of the old town.

Practical tipTallinn is an easy day trip by fast ferry from Helsinki, but staying overnight lets you see the old town at dusk once the cruise-ship crowds have cleared out.
