The Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along Australia's northeast coast, visible even from space, and remains (despite well-documented bleaching pressures from climate change) one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet.
Choosing a Base
Cairns is the larger, more developed gateway with the most tour operator options and flight connections, while Port Douglas, an hour further north, is smaller, more upscale, and closer to some of the reef's better-preserved outer sections.
Both offer day trips to pontoons on the outer reef, typically including snorkelling, introductory or certified diving, and glass-bottom boat viewing, outer reef trips generally show noticeably healthier coral than inner reef sites closer to shore.
Diving and Conservation
Certified divers can access sites with better visibility and marine life density than snorkelling alone allows, the Cod Hole and sites around Lizard Island are considered among the best in the region for experienced divers.
Choose operators certified under the Ecotourism Australia or similar sustainability programs, which follow reef-safe practices and contribute to ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts.
