Krabi's coastline is defined by limestone karsts rising sheer out of turquoise water, a landscape that has made Railay (a small peninsula reachable only by boat despite being technically attached to the mainland) one of the most striking beach destinations in Southeast Asia, and one of the world's premier rock-climbing spots.
Railay and Rock Climbing
Railay's isolation, cut off from the mainland by sheer cliffs, has kept development smaller in scale than Phuket's, longtail boats are the only way in or out, and the beach itself is framed by limestone towers that draw climbers from around the world to routes rated from beginner to expert.
Deep water soloing (climbing limestone cliffs directly above the sea without ropes, so a fall simply means dropping into the water) originated partly around Krabi's coastline and remains one of the area's signature activities for climbers of all levels.
Island Hopping
The Four Islands tour, covering Poda, Tup, Chicken, and Phra Nang beach by longtail boat, is Krabi's standard day trip, Chicken Island's rock formation, resembling a chicken's head from certain angles, gives the tour its informal name.
Emerald Pool and Blue Pool, hidden within Krabi's inland jungle, offer a freshwater alternative to the coastal scenery, a mineral-rich pool with a distinctive turquoise-green colour, reachable via a short jungle walk from the parking area.
