Kraków, unlike Warsaw, survived the Second World War largely undamaged, leaving one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe, Wawel Castle on its hill above the Vistula, Europe's largest medieval market square, and a former Jewish quarter that is once again one of the city's most vibrant districts. It's also the closest city to Auschwitz-Birkenau, a visit that reshapes how the rest of the trip is understood.
Wawel and the Old Town
Wawel Castle and Cathedral, seat of Polish kings for centuries, sit on a limestone hill above the river, the cathedral's crypt holds the tombs of Polish monarchs and national heroes, and the castle's state rooms display one of Europe's finest tapestry collections. Arrive early to beat the tour groups, which build steadily through the day.
Rynek Główny, the main market square, is Europe's largest medieval town square and still functions exactly as it did centuries ago, the Cloth Hall in its centre now sells souvenirs rather than textiles, and a bugle call sounds from St. Mary's Basilica tower every hour, cutting off abruptly in memory of a trumpeter shot mid-note during a 13th-century invasion.
Kazimierz and Auschwitz
Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter, was largely spared physical destruction but lost nearly its entire population in the Holocaust, today it holds several historic synagogues, a moving Jewish cemetery, and has become Kraków's best neighbourhood for nightlife and food, an uneasy but honest coexistence of memory and daily life.
Auschwitz-Birkenau, ninety minutes away by bus or organised tour, requires advance booking and a full day. It is not comfortable viewing, nor should it be, but it is, for most visitors, the most important stop in the region, and guides handle the material with the gravity it demands.
