Morocco's climate shifts more within a single day than most destinations shift across seasons. A Marrakech afternoon can hit 35°C while the same evening in the Atlas foothills drops into single digits. Packing well here means dressing in layers you can add and remove, not choosing one outfit for the whole trip.
Clothing for the Medina
Lightweight, breathable, loose-fitting clothing works best in the cities, linen and cotton over synthetic fabrics, which trap heat. Shoulders and knees covered is the practical baseline in medinas and souks, not just out of religious respect but because it draws far less attention as a visitor. Long, loose trousers or midi skirts and short-sleeve or three-quarter-sleeve tops cover most days comfortably.
Desert and Atlas Mountain Evenings
Temperatures fall sharply after sunset in the Sahara and the mountains, a warm fleece or down layer is essential even in summer if a desert camp or Atlas trek is on the itinerary. A scarf or shemagh does double duty: warmth at night, and protection from sun and dust during the day.
Footwear
Comfortable closed-toe walking shoes are non-negotiable for medina cobblestones, which are uneven and occasionally slick. Add sandals for riads and hammams, and if a desert or trekking excursion is planned, proper hiking shoes with ankle support and dust protection.
What Not to Bring
Skip anything sleeveless, low-cut, or above the knee for city days, it's not banned, but it draws unwanted attention, particularly for women travelling alone. Leave shorts for the riad pool rather than the street. And go easy on valuables: leave fine jewellery at home and keep electronics in a bag that zips closed, standard practice in any dense market environment.
