Nelspruit, officially Mbombela, is the capital of Mpumalanga and the practical staging post for the whole Lowveld. Most visitors treat it as a night either side of something else: the Kruger National Park to the east, the Panorama Route escarpment to the north, and the Eswatini border to the south.
That makes it an unusually useful place to stay rather than a destination in itself. It sits at only 660 metres in a subtropical valley, so it is warm, green and noticeably more humid than the highveld a few hours west.
The Kruger gateway
Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is fifteen minutes from town with daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, which is why so many safari trips begin here. By road, the Numbi Gate is about an hour away, Malelane roughly ninety minutes, and Paul Kruger Gate near Skukuza around two hours. Gates open at sunrise, so if you want the first hours of light inside the park you need to be on the road well before dawn, and a night in Nelspruit is what makes that possible.

A reliable, well-located base in the middle of Mbombela, close to the Riverside precinct and an easy start for an early drive to the Kruger's Numbi or Malelane gates. Straightforward rather than glamorous, which is what most people want the night before a safari.
The Panorama Route
North of Nelspruit the land climbs abruptly to the Drakensberg escarpment, and the road along the top strings together the Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondavels, Bourke's Luck Potholes, God's Window and the waterfalls around Sabie and Graskop. It is one of the great scenic drives in the country and needs a full day, ideally two, with a night in Graskop or Sabie rather than a round trip from Nelspruit.
Where to stay
In town, the Riverside and Sonheuwel areas hold most of the hotels and are convenient for the airport and the N4. The White River road, twenty minutes north, has the better country lodges and guesthouses set in macadamia and citrus estates and is worth the short extra drive. Hazyview, forty-five minutes northeast, is closer to the Kruger's Paul Kruger and Phabeni gates and to the Panorama Route both.
When to come
For game viewing, the dry winter months from May to September are best: the bush thins out, animals concentrate around water, and the humidity drops away. Summer is hot, green and wet, with better birding and dramatic afternoon storms, but denser vegetation and a higher malaria risk in the Lowveld. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before a summer visit.
