Udaipur: The City of Lakes

Udaipur is Rajasthan's most romantic city, its City Palace and Lake Palace hotel both appearing to rise directly out of Lake Pichola's still water, a setting so cinematic that a Bond film (Octopussy) was shot here and is still screened nightly at rooftop restaurants across town.

The City Palace and Lake Pichola

The City Palace, a sprawling complex built up by successive maharanas over four centuries, has courtyards, mirrored halls, and a museum covering Mewar dynasty history, climb to its highest terraces for a full view over the lake.

A sunset boat trip on Lake Pichola, taking in the Lake Palace (now a hotel, only accessible to guests) and Jag Mandir island, is the essential Udaipur activity, book through your hotel for the best-timed departure.

Rooftop Dining and Old City Lanes

Udaipur's rooftop restaurants, clustered around Jagdish Chowk and Lal Ghat, all compete on the same view (the lake, the palace, the surrounding hills) so choose based on food quality rather than assuming the view will differ meaningfully between them.

The old city's narrow lanes hold miniature painting workshops, textile shops, and havelis (merchant mansions) worth exploring on foot, particularly around the Bagore ki Haveli, which hosts an evening folk dance performance.

Practical tipUdaipur is significantly more manageable on foot than Jaipur or Delhi, the old city and lake area are compact enough to explore without needing a driver for a full day.

Taj Lake Palace

★★★★★

An 18th-century white marble palace occupying its own island in the middle of Lake Pichola, reached only by private boat, as close as a hotel gets to being a landmark in its own right.
