Pokhara: Where the Annapurnas Meet the Lake

Pokhara offers something Kathmandu can't, a calm lakeside setting with the Annapurna massif rising directly behind it, snow peaks reflected in Phewa Lake on clear mornings. It functions as the launch point for treks into the Annapurna region, but has enough of its own charm that many visitors linger before or after their trek rather than just passing through.

The Lake and Mountain Views

Phewa Lake, with the small Tal Barahi temple on an island near its shore, gives Pokhara its most famous view, paddle a boat out at dawn for the mirror-still reflection of Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain), one of the most sacred and distinctively shaped peaks in the Annapurna range.

Sarangkot, a hilltop viewpoint above the town, is the classic sunrise spot for watching the entire Annapurna range turn pink and gold, arrive in the dark for a seat, as the small platform fills quickly during peak trekking season.

Trekking Hub

Pokhara is the starting point for most Annapurna region treks, from the multi-day Annapurna Base Camp trek to shorter loops like Ghorepani Poon Hill, which can be done in three to four days and still delivers spectacular mountain panoramas for less commitment.

The town's lakeside strip has developed a laid-back backpacker infrastructure of gear shops, cafes, and guesthouses that makes arranging permits, guides, and porters straightforward even without advance planning.

Practical tipBook a sunrise flight or hike to Sarangkot on your first clear morning, Pokhara's mountain views can vanish behind cloud cover for days at a time, especially outside peak trekking season.
